Merit-Based Inclusion: Building Stability & Sustainability

C5 Learning & Development™ offers a four-part series of foundational discussions designed to help organizations understand concepts that are often used interchangeably but do not mean the same thing.

"Merit and inclusion are not competing organizational principles. Both are required to build organizational stability and sustainability."

These are not four unrelated workshops. The discussions are intentionally sequenced and build upon one another. Each discussion establishes the foundation necessary for the next while examining how Merit-Based Inclusion applies within organizations. Organizations need meaningful access, opportunity, inclusion, and fairness while also maintaining standards for qualifications, performance, contribution, development, and accountability.

The four discussions

Merit-Based Inclusion: Foundational Discussions

Each discussion is intentionally sequenced. The series is designed to be experienced in order — each conversation establishes the foundation for the next.

01

Discussion 01

Tolerance vs. Acceptance

How we respond to difference

Participants examine the difference between tolerance and acceptance and why the terms are not interchangeable. The discussion explores why tolerating differences is not the same as accepting that differences exist, why that distinction matters within organizations, and how Merit-Based Inclusion creates space for differences while maintaining shared organizational expectations, standards, contribution, and accountability.

02

Discussion 02

Diversity vs. Inclusion

How difference is represented and included

Building upon the first discussion, participants examine the difference between diversity and inclusion and why representation alone should not be confused with inclusion. The discussion explores the difference between having different people represented within an organization and ensuring that people have meaningful opportunities to participate, contribute, develop, and succeed — connected to Merit-Based Inclusion through access and opportunity alongside qualifications, contribution, performance, and accountability.

03

Discussion 03

Racism vs. Bias

How perceptions can influence experiences and decisions

Building upon the first two discussions, participants examine the difference between racism and bias and why the terms should not be treated as interchangeable. The discussion explores how bias can influence organizational perceptions, experiences, access, opportunities, and decision-making — including how bias may influence the way organizations perceive, evaluate, or recognize merit — and applies Merit-Based Inclusion to organizational decision-making.

04

Discussion 04

Equity vs. Equality

How access and opportunity are approached

The fourth discussion brings the foundational series together by examining the difference between equity and equality and why the concepts are not synonymous. Participants explore how each concept can influence organizational approaches to access, opportunity, resources, expectations, and decision-making — connected to Merit-Based Inclusion and the need to maintain fairness, meaningful opportunity, organizational standards, contribution, performance, and accountability.

An intentional progression

Each discussion establishes the foundation necessary for the next. The series is designed to be experienced in sequence.
